in the event of needing to tl;dr canon, with a walter bias

Walter is the reincarnation of this thing called the Great Spirit of Spite. Occasionally shit happens and he gets born, stans for anarchy, is killed by his best friend, and comes back later to maintain the philosophical balance of humankind or some shit. He doesn't remember any past lives but sometimes shit gets weird in his dreams.

Walter was a dirty peasant and also a fisherman's kid who was supposed to grow up and be a fisherman except he was ichthyophobic. I can't imagine that earned him much respect. He hated his life when he was a peasant because he was not looking forward to doing the same shit every day with no advancement or greater meaning because he didn't care enough about most people to be motivated by family and the weird Abrahamic spinoff religion of Mikado does nothing for him.

Then he got drafted into the demon-summoning Samurai military when he was 18. Shit was great! He made friends and did exciting things. One of the other recruits was a total prick and used to be rich and couldn't handle the fact that Walter and Flynn were doing better than him but were also dirty peasants. So he roped some of the senior Samurai who felt the same way into helping him TRY TO BUMP THE TWO OF THEM OFF by luring them into the Naraku cavern where demons live and secretly siccing demons on them. It failed hideously (though Walter got roughed up a little) and Navarre had a breakdown and went batshit and had to be discharged from service because demons are fucking terrifying.

Training continued, less Navarre, the little shit. The other recruits are Flynn, a fellow Casualry and super-quiet guy who Walter is all over; Jonathan, goody-two-shoes Luxuror who's fun to mess with, Walter's pretty sure he's gay; Isabeau, who is really standoffish early on because having to fit in with a bunch of guys makes her nervous and she ends up coming off icy, Walter kind of rolls his eyes at her for it.

A Walter-led attempt at catching Isabeau reading shoujo manga and embarrassing her at like midnight fails, instead they see Flynn's home village and beg the Commander to send them on the mission. They go to Kiccigiorgi, everything's on fire, people turned into demons apparently after reading the Black Samurai's books, and nobody is happy. Flynn's childhood friend Issachar who was expecting to become a Samurai and couldn't get over not passing the Rite was the one who brought the books to the village, he becomes a demon, Flynn kills him. They evacuate all the humans and go home.

Walter says the best thing when you've just killed your best friend and your parents are dead is to get some fresh air and carry on as usual. Thanks, Walter.

The Religious Authority orders Samurai to BREAK THE COOOOODE and go deep into Naraku to chase the Black Samurai and oh while you're down there bring us some mystic relics to study thanks.

Turns out Mikado is on top of a dome which is on top of post-apocalyptic demon-infested Tokyo.

PEOPLE LIVE IN SUBWAY STATIONS AND IT'S SHIT. The underground areas are safe from demons but the streets are infested and "Hunters" risk life and limb to kill demons for reasons, including food. Demons don't taste too great. The yakuza runs everything. The four prentice Samurai travel around, dumpster-dive and sell technology they don't understand to people who can't leave the subway stations, and kill ludicrous amounts of demons. The yakuza have a contract with all the demons to keep the demons out of the subway as long as they feed them these red pill things. If people eat red pills they turn into demons but not many people know that.

The Black Samurai is hiding in Ikebukuro but it's been taken over by Xi Wangmu who eats everyone. A lady named Kaga and her comrades from the Ring of Gaea (a kind of anarchist organization that fights everything and resists the yakuza) fight Xi Wangmu and get eaten but before Kaga dies she gives the Samurai this cool speech and then she punches Xi Wangmu from inside her stomach a lot or something so they can kill her.

They catch the Black Samurai. She doesn't really put up a fight. They're awarded a big prestigious military honor that only like three people have ever gotten. Walter is suspicious of everything, especially because the Religious Authority keeps talking shit about him. The Black Samurai is publicly executed but she doesn't seem bothered by it. Walter continues to be suspicious. The Religious Authority wants them to run more errands to Tokyo except they're being really vague about it and Walter's kind of mad now.

The errand involves naked men and birdcages and absolutely nothing was explained.

Then the Black Samurai just fucking stands up out of her coffin and waltzes back to the underground.

The four prentices are ordered to go find her and also negotiate with the yakuza boss Tayama, who has a Samurai hostage and is pissed off about the people from above disturbing his place. He tells them to go find a chick called Yuriko who's the leader of the Ring of Gaea and kill her so he'll let the guy go.

TURNS OUT YURIKO AND THE BLACK SAMURAI ARE THE SAME PERSON AND ALSO THE DEMON LILITH and she gives them this huge speech about freedom and blah blah and hey go check out what's under the Hills in Roppongi and you'll see what true evil is.

Walter gets frustrated because nobody else is fucking telling him anything so he storms off. You catch back up to him and everyone goes to the Reverse Hills which is an upside-down building under the ground...?

AND WOW HOLY SHIT so it looks like the Red Pills are human brain juice and Tayama's getting it by 1) abducting dissenters and basically strapping them to a chair and turning them into little brain juice farms, 2) taking their children, raising them in this hell facility, and doing the same, or 3) actually breeding humans to do this

Walter flips his absolute shit. You go back to the surface and find out the angels have taken over Mikado to try to maintain order and have like brainwashed everyone. Walter flips his shit even more and goes SAYONARA FUCKERS, Flynn either goes with Jonathan to kill Lilith or with Walter to...open a gate to hell and bring down the corrupt government by way of DEMONS, and the two timelines join back up later. On law path Walter goes one-man boss rush on a bunch of Japanese gods and heroes then shanks the hell out of Tayama just in time for Flynn and Jonathan to show up but he doesn't remember that route. On chaos path he and Flynn do the boss rush together and they just open the gate to hell by way of particle-accelerator-slash-nuclear-reactor (??) while Tayama's freaking out in the background.

Walter and Jonathan and Flynn wake up in Tokyo except it's a fucking desert and Walter and Jonathan start bitching at each other over who remembers what actually happened. It turns out you're in like an alternate present where the dome never happened, Tokyo got bombed to hell, and the angels put a poison robot down to smoke out the survivors. You kill the poison robot, fend off the delusional screeching of Jonathan's preincarnation, and attempt to get back home through the particle accelerator black hole thing.

Another alternate universe! This time everyone's demons and Tokyo is on fire. Walter's preincarnation went batshit and is the king of everything, you have to kill him so that a guy can try to make life better for the few humans who decided to take refuge in being food sources instead of going for the FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT demon life.

I play from neutral route, so at this point Walter gets bitched at a little by some white people (....like, creepy ghost white, not....white), then nabbed by Lucifer who is also a schoolgirl who I forgot to mention but she kept popping up and making Walter doki and none of the NPCs seemed to remember her existence. She and Walter do some kind of fusion dance which makes Walter bodyhost to Lucifer and he holes up in this ~Lucifer Palace~ pocket dimension thing and gets reports from high-ranking demons on what's going on outside. He wants to bust open the path to the surface so that the Tokyo people and also demons can get out and they can ruin the angels' plan. The angels want to kill everyone below so their perfect kingdom can happen.

Flynn sets out on a quest to wake up the demon who is actually the dome over Tokyo so....things can happen. He has to kill his friends for this. First he kills Jonathan who fusion danced with angels and became Merkabah, then he and Isabeau evacuate everyone to Tokyo, then Flynn goes to confront Walter. Walter's like "okay we gotta fight" and then goes Lucifer, and then gets killed, and then Flynn takes the little glowy ball that is the Great Spirit of Spite and feeds it to Masakado and YAY GOOD END.
